Launch of Step Up to A Start Up

On the 16th of July 2014, Step Up 2 A Start Up programme was launched at Gold Reef City. STEP UP 2 A START- UP is a nationwide programme to teach high-school learners in grade 10, 11 and 12 how to become successful entrepreneurs. Learners are taught how to develop entrepreneurial skills through an educational movie which will be broadcasted at Ster-Kinekor Cinemas across the nine provinces.

Afterwards learners will receive an entrepreneur toolkit which is designed to help them get started as an entrepreneur.  Once that is done, learners are given the chance to showcase their business idea at the Step Up 2 A Start Up National Youth Competition. Winners of that competition are then sent to the Step Up 2 A Start Up Entrepreneurs Bootcamp where they will be further mentored about the ins and outs of entrepreneurship. An awards ceremony acknowledging the best efforts of the learners concludes the programme.

Step Up 2 A Start Up is part of the NYDA’s Entrepreneurship Development Programme which aims to create a conducive environment for young entrepreneurs to access relevant entrepreneurship skills, knowledge, values and attitudes for their businesses.
Speakers included NYDA Chairperson Mr. Pillay, CEO of Hamilton Bradshaw Mr. James Caan, Department of Trade and Industry DG Mr. Lionel October, Managing Director of Primestars Marketing Mr. Martin Sweet and other sponsor representatives from SASOL, MTN, ABSA and Putco.

In his speech Mr Pillay noted that more needs to be done to support youth entrepreneurship. He cited that through this Step Up 2 A Start Up initiative, the NYDA is proud to have been the main sponsor, contributing R3-million towards the project. Mr. Pillay's message to the youth was for them to step up and be brave. He encouraged them to take a bite at entrepreneurship and not be afraid.
